Patios fail when they're laid on sand instead of concrete, when falls are guessed not set, or when cheap bagged sandstone is used without sealing. We don't do any of those. Every patio sits on a proper concrete bed, with 1:80 falls away from the house and joints filled with quality flexible pointing.
Porcelain has overtaken Indian sandstone as our most-fitted patio material — it's harder-wearing, doesn't need sealing, doesn't move colour year-to-year, and the price has come down. Sandstone is still beautiful for traditional gardens. Granite and composite have niches.
